How many Windows viruses are there?

It is estimated there are in excess of 1
million viruses for Microsoft Windows PC's. It is not surprising that your anti-virus software has a performance impact on the speed of your computer. However it is far cheaper and easier to keep your anti-virus up to date than it is to remove a virus.

If you think you may have a problem you can contact us on 01279 329819 or email enquiries@kenmal.co.uk.

Keep safe while shopping on-line.

Buying goods over the Internet can be fraught with dangers. However if you follow the suggestions below, you are less likely to run into trouble.

Ensure your anti-virus is up to date.

Check that the website you are dealing with is secure and your card details are encrypted. Look for “https://” rather than “http://” and a closed lock/key symbol in your browser's address bar.

Check the site out if you have never used it before – see if you know anyone who has made a purchase.

Look for e-commerce retailers that use “Verified by Visa” or similar for added protection against card fraud on-line.

Keep a copy of all your transactions to check against your bank statements.

Intel recall new motherboards with the new Sandy Bridge chipset

If you have recently bought a new computer with the latest chipset, it may be less than reliable.

At the beginning of February, Intel found a flaw in the SATA controller of its Sandy Bridge chipsets, which necessitated a recall of motherboards; both desktops and laptops were affected. A fix has been implemented and Intel says stock levels will return to normal during April. Until then, expect a small delay with the delivery of Sandy Bridge-based systems, and check with the manufacturer you're ordering from that you're buying post-recall hardware. If you think you have one of the affected motherboards, you should check with your supplier in the first instance.

Security Threat Report: 2011

The Security Threat Landscape:
Where We Were and Where We're Going

We will remember 2010 as a year in which our interaction with technology, and with each other, evolved due to the widespread adoption of social media and the use of innovative mobile devices.

Today, users are the content. Driving the growth, and at the same time being driven by it, the explosion in mobile computing is expanding the impact of the social web. And, the way that content is shared and accessed is now the core of a new global culture, affecting and combining the spheres of personal and business life.

Of course, this evolution of technology is closely tracked by the “bad guys” willing to exploit weaknesses in our technologies and ourselves.
